Peter Bonutti, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon, inventor, author, professor, consultant, and entrepreneur noted for his commitment to his patients, community, and specialty. Through the Bonutti Clinic, Dr. Bonutti brings world-class care and research to Illinois, attracting patients from all over the world while providing for the community’s medical needs and serving as a prominent employer. Founded in 1989 with three employees, the Bonutti Clinic has grown to over 170 employees. It regularly draws visiting physicians from around the globe, over 100 of whom have come to observe Dr. Bonutti’s patented minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Recognized as a pioneer in minimally invasive surgeries, Dr. Bonutti holds 159 US patents, with 60 more pending. The most recent is for unique surgical instrumentation used in his minimally invasive total knee replacement procedure. He has transferred or licensed technology to major corporations including Hitachi, Kyphon, Tyco Medical/US Surgical, and Stryker. Dr. Bonutti and his technological contributions were credited in an annual report for Stryker, one of the 50 top companies of the S&P 500 according to BusinessWeek.
Dr. Bonutti has performed over 25,000 orthopedic surgical procedures. He serves as team orthopedist and adjunct clinical professor for Eastern Illinois University. He is also an associate clinical professor at University of Arkansas. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Dr. Bonutti earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic training at the Cleveland Clinic with fellowship training completed internationally in Australia, New Zealand, Austria, and Canada. Dr. Bonutti was also director of the orthopedic section of the Cleveland Research Institute.
