Daniel Dethmers
MD, FAAOS

Dr. Dethmers received his medical degree and served his internship at the Pritzker School of Medicine University of Chicago.  He then went on to do a fellowship in Bioengineering and residency in Orthopedics at Cornell University Hospital for Special Surgery, consistently ranked among the top Orthopedic Hospitals in the world.

While at the Hospital for Special Surgery, he worked and published with Dr. John Insall, developer of the first successful total knee and Dr. Al Bernstein, PhD, developer of the second major successful total knee design.  These two designs are still the basis for all subsequent total knees.

During his time working with the engineers and physicians at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Dethmers developed an understanding and ability to evaluate and apply new technology for reconstructive orthopedics of the knee, hip and shoulder.

Presently, major interests are in three areas.
1)  Knee Surgery

  • Has performed over one thousand knee replacements using minimally invasive computer navigation technique.  This combines the advantages of minimal damage to the surrounding muscles and ligaments with the superior accuracy of the 3 dimensional optimization computer alignment technique.
  • Has performed thousands of knee arthroscopy procedures including arthroscopic anterior cruciate reconstruction.

2)  Hip Surgery

  • A twenty-five year experience  with total hip replacement including a seven year experience with minimally invasive total hips.
  • A four year experience with hip resurfacing; a bone conserving procedure for younger patients with hip disease.
  • Hip arthroscopy - a procedure for younger patients with labral tears or small areas of arthritis.

3) Shoulder Surgery

  • A twenty year experience with shoulder arthroscopy and over one thousand arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs.
  • Shoulder replacement arthroplasty for shoulder arthritis including a five year experience with the so-called Reverse Total Shoulder - A special procedure for patients with both severe arthritis and chronic tears of the rotator cuff tendons.
