Dr. Karl Rudert presented Glen Hesler Award

Eastern Illinois athletics presented its 2008 Glen Hesler Award to Dr. Karl Rudert as the EIU Panther Club kicked off its 2008 spring fund drive over the weekend.

 
Dr. Rudert was presented the award by current EIU athletic director Ken Baker at a reception on Friday night at Lincoln Springs Resort just outside Charleston.  Dr. Rudert has been a supported of the EIU Panther Club since 1993 giving to the club both financially and by donating his time.  He is a former Panther Club Board of Director and fund drive worker.
 
He is active in teaching athletic training to students, holds clinics in the EIU training room, attends all home and away football games as part of the official support staff, attends most home basketball games, volunteers to see athletes in the training room one or two nights a week while frequently offering additional visits when needed.  He often calls parents of student-athletes to explain injuries regarding their son/daughter, expedites further medical needs and sets up additional tests or orthopedic surgeon referrals.
 
The Glen Hesler Award is the most prestigious honor that the athletic department bestows upon an individual each year at the Panther Club Fund Drive.  It’s named for Glen Hesler, a long time benefactor for the University, a distinguished alumnus and a former football player in the 1920’s.  Hesler loved Panther Athletics and its coaches. He raised money to support EIU student-athletes, attended events and worked to help increase the public’s perception of Panther Athletics being first class.

 

 

Peter Bonutti, MD was faculty and speaker at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Meeting on June 22-23, 2007, at the Orthopedic Learning Center in Rosemont, IL.  He was the surgeon on a demonstration on MIS Mid-Vastus Approach.  There were approximately 80 orthopedic surgeons in attendance.  He also assisted on MIS Total Hip and Computer Navigation for Hip & Knee Arthroplasty.

Peter Bonutti was keynote speaker at ISAKOS Masters Course, Advances in Knee Arthroplasty in Florence, Italy.  Dr. Bonutti spoke on Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty.  The course was attended by over 300 international surgeons on May 26, 2007 in Florence, Italy.

Dr. Bonutti was also on the Knee Committee for the International Society of Arthroscopy and Knee Orthopedic Surgery.  Dr. Bonutti spoke on Pitfalls and Complications of Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty at the Conference on May 29, 2007 in Florence, Italy.

Peter Bonutti, MD, was invited Faculty and Speaker at the Asia Pacific Knee Symposium from April 26-30, 2007, in Macau, China. The meeting focus was on knee arthroplasty.  Over 100 Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, United States & England surgeons were in attendance.  Dr. Bonutti spoke on “How to Get it Right the First Time and the Future of MIS TKR”.   He also presented on “Patient Selection for Osteotomy vs. UKA vs TKA”, “Mobile Bearings: Are They Worth It”?, “Infection in TKR”, and “Navigation in TKA. Pros and Cons”.   He was also a panel member for  a session on Challenges in TKR.

Peter Bonutti, MD, spoke at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons National Meeting from Feb. 14 - Feb. 18, 2007, in San Diego, CA.  There were over  20,000 orthopedic surgeons in attendance.  Dr. Bonutti was an Invited Speaker on his paper presentation titled 1) “Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty Using The Contralateral Knee As A Control Group”.  He also presented a 2) Surgical Demonstration on “Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty - The Mini Subvastus Approach” and 3) “Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty - The Mini Midvastus Approach”. 

Two scientific exhibits authored by Dr. Bonutti were presented; 1) Inventing Orthopedics From Basic Design to Working Product and 2) Minimally Invasive Knee Arthroplasty: Early complications and Difficulties.   Dr. Bonutti was also the author of two posters; Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty: Implant Survival & Risk Factors at 11 Year Followup and  The Use of an Alumina-On-Alumina Bearing System in THA for Avascular Necrosis of the Hip. 

Dr. Bonutti’s research and development company, Bonutti Technologies, also had a booth at the Academy where they displayed several of their patented products including Joint Active Systems, Transet, and Unity Tak.

Daniel Dethmers, MD, was the keynote speaker at the Contemporary & Future Concepts of Orthopaedics in Whistler, British Columbia from February 7-10, 2007. The course provided hip and knee reconstruction surgeons educational opportunities to assess clinical and technological advancements that can improve patient outcomes.  Navigation, minimally invasive surgical techniques and enhanced implants offer the surgeon new surgical choices that require educational updates.  During this three day course, faculty focused on the operative choices for primary hip and knee arthroplasty.  They also discussed the indications for and the pros and cons of open versus minimally invasive surgery as well as the use of navigation to improve placement and fit.   Other topics that were discussed included implant design, bearing surfaces and wear in respect to clinical outcomes. 
Dr. Dethmers lectured on “Patellofemoral”, “New Bearings for Knee”, “What Has Changed in Your Practice? Cycles of Orthopedics? USA”, and “Why There Is No US Registry”.  

Dr. Dethmers provides patient care through an afternoon clinic at Safe Works in Champaign on Fridays.  He also performs orthopedic surgery at Provena Covenant Hospital in Urbana.

Peter Bonutti, MD, was keynote speaker at the International Course in Arthroplasties in Barcelona from November 28 - December 1, 2006. Over 500 Joint Replacement Surgeons from around the world were in attendance. Dr. Bonutti lectured on “Mobile Bearings: Are They Worth It?” , “MIS TKA – Selecting the Best Approach”, and “Pitfalls and Complications of MIS TKA”. 

On December 2, 2006, Dr. Bonutti traveled to New York where he was an invited speaker at the Advances in Surgical Technology meeting.  He was involved in a workshop where he presented a video lecture on “Mini TKA Approaches” and also was asked to be the moderator for a session on Advancements with High Performance Knees.

Medical Staff Achievements

On October 6-15, 2005, Peter Bonutti, MD, spoke in a whirlwind tour in Freiburg, Germany; London, England; Singapore, Melbourne, Perth, and Sidney, Australia.

In Perth, Dr. Bonutti was the keynote speaker at the Australia Orthopedic Association and spoke on “New Frontiers in Minimally Invasive Arthroplasty Surgery”. He also spoke on “Surgical Techniques for Minimally Invasive Arthroplasty”, “Arthroscopic Assisted Knee Arthroplasty”, and “Suspended Leg Approach for Minimally Invasive Knee Surgery”. He also moderated sessions on Shoulder Arthroplasty and Computer Assisted Navigation for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty.

Peter Bonutti, MD, was faculty at the prestigious Harvard 35 th Annual Course, Advances in Arthroplasty, September 28 - October 1, 2005. The course is an international course with over 500 orthopedic surgeons and attendees.

Dr. Bonutti spoke on “Bearing Surfaces in Hip Replacement - X3 Second Generation Crosslinked Polyethylene”. Dr. Bonutti also spoke on “Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty - Selecting The Best Approach”. Dr. Bonutti was a part of a faculty session on Minimally Invasive Knee Arthroplasty - Approaches, Techniques, Pitfalls & Complications.

Local Surgeons Lead National Conference

Dr. Peter Bonutti of Effingham served as chairman of a recently held national orthopedic course titled ‘Advances in Primary Hip and Knee Arthroplasty’. Dr. Bonutti assembled the national faculty and chaired the course. Discussion covered new directions in hip and knee surgery. The course was at the Hyatt McCormick Center in Chicago, IL.      Dr. Bonutti was chairman of a National Orthopedic course in Chicago entitled Advanced in Primary Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. Dr. Bonutti assembled the national faculty and chaired the course. The course included talks on primary hip and knee arthroplasty, advanced in technology and arthroscopic intervention for degenerative joints. Dr. Bonutti was involved in several panel discussions including Minimally Invasive Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. Dr. Bonutti also spoke on Selecting the Best Approach for TKA, and Computer Assisted Navigation for TKA: Pros and Cons.

The course was at the Hyatt McCormick Center in Chicago, IL. (This is the first time that a St. Anthony’s staff member has chaired a national course.)

     Dr. Daniel Dethmers recently attended the Surgical Decisions and Advancements in Primary Hip & Knee Reconstruction course in Chicago, IL on Sept. 16-17, 2005. He presented on a lecture “Simultaneous Bilateral Total Knee Replacement”.

     Peter M. Bonutti, M.D., attended a number of meetings in May, as invited faculty lecturing on minimally invasive surgical procedures. On May 12-13, he attended the 4th International Congress Meeting, "MIS: Current Results and Future Development" in Rome, Italy. On May 14-15, Dr. Bonutti traveled to Seville, Spain where he attended the "High Performace Knee Meeting." Dr. Bonutti then traveled to Novo Mesto, Slovenia from May 19-21 where he also did a presentation on MIS-TKA.

     On June 3-5, Peter M. Bonutti, MD was invited faculty to the 5th Annual Arthroplasty Course: Hip and Knee in Minneapolis. He presented a lecture on "MIS TKA: How I Do It." He was asked to be part of a Panel Discussion on the "Advances in Knee Arthroplasty" session and "How I Perform a TKA" session.

Peter Bonutti, M.D., was recently a speaker at Styker Hip Sales Meeting in Dallas. Dr. Bonutti spoke on cementless arthroplasty and long term results of hydroxyapatite coated total hip replacements. The meeting was attended by over 500 physicians, engineers, and corporate representatives. Dr Bonutti was invited faculty and gave five presentations on cementless hip arthroplasty and his clinical experience with hydroxyapatite coated total hip arthroplasty with up to 12-year follow-up.
