Peter M. Bonutti, MD

Peter Bonutti, MD was invited faculty and a keynote speaker at the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Orthopedic Association in Tokyo, Japan May 27-29, 2010.    Over 2,000 orthopedists from Japan and Asia attended the meeting. Dr. Bonutti presented on his Clinical Experience With Crosslinked Polyethylene For Hip Arthroplasty in 589 Patients. 

Dr. Bonutti spoke on First and Second Generation Crosslinked Polyethylene, as well as Ceramic on Ceramic Hip Arthroplasty.

Dr. Bonutti also spoke on results of a Multicenter Prospective Study on X3 with Evaluation of Clinical Radiographic and Wear Analysis. 

He is a lead investigator on a prospective multicenter study, evaluating the X3 highly crosslinked polyethylene.  Other sites in the study include Mayo Clinic, New England Baptist Hospital, Indiana University, Baylor University, and Emery University.  The study assess the clinical and radiographic results with wear analysis of X3, the first third generation highly crosslinked polyethylene which decreases wear comparable to metal on metal bearings without the risk of metallosis.

Dr. Peter Bonutti was an instructor, speaker, scientific and poster exhibitor at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons from Mar. 9 - Mar. 13, 2010, in New Orleans, LA.  There were over 10,000 orthopedic surgeons at the International Meeting.  Dr. Bonutti was Faculty in the Instructional Course titled “Patient Selection, Preoperative Planning, Surgical Approaches & Future of Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty.  Dr. Bonutti was Author and Presenter of the paper “UKA in Obese Patients who have Body Mass Index of 35 Kg/m2 or Greater: A Comparison Study”.  He also coauthored two other papers at the academy meeting, “Chronic Opioid Use Prior to Total Knee Arthroplasty” and “Are Commercially-Available Solutions Effective Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus?”.  He was the author and presenter of  poster “Tourniquet Use During Total Knee Arthroplasty”.  Dr. Bonutti also coauthored two Scientific Exhibits “Overview of Alternative Bearings in Total Hip Arthroplasty” and “Athletic Activity Following Total Hip Arthroplasty: Assessment and Outcomes”.

On November 16, 2009, Peter Bonutti, MD, gave Grand Rounds at the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, IL.   He lectured to the orthopedic residents and Springfield surgeons on “Unicompartmental Knee Replacement”.  Dr. Bonutti currently has three published papers on the clinical experience and long term success of UKA; one of which is coauthored by Dr. Daniel Dethmers.  1) “Mid-term Results and Factors Affecting Outcome of a Metal-backed Unicompartmental Knee Design: A Case Series.”;  Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Research, October 2009.   2) “Early Failure of a Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty Design with an All-Polyethylene Tibial Component.” Knee  January 2010  and 3) “Contemporary Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty: Fixed Versus Mobile Bearing.” Journal of Arthroplasty, October 2008.
Dr. Daniel Dethmers also lectured at the conference speaking on “Computer Assisted Navigation in Total Knee Arthroplasty”.  
On November 24, 2009, Peter Bonutti, MD was the invited guest speaker at the Effingham Sunrise Rotary Meeting. He lectured on “The Bonutti Group: 20 Years of Innovation in Effingham”.

Over 350 women took the opportunity to learn about what it means “Being a Woman…Being Aware…Being Well” at the second annual St. Anthony’s Women’s Wellness Event on October 20, 2009 at Keller’s Convention Center.  The free event included informational displays, free balance and bone density screenings, as well as informational presentations given by Dr. Ruben Boyajian and Dr. Karl Rudert.

Dr. Karl Rudert presented on Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis.  He addressed the audience on the different phases, their causes and offered answers on when to seek medical care for both conditions.  He further discussed the treatments for both as well as options for those already suffering from osteoarthritis or osteoporosis.

Dr. Bonutti recently had two papers published on research performed here in Effingham and a joint program with Michael Mont, MD in Baltimore, Maryland. The first paper, “Femoral Notch Stenosis Caused by Soft Tissue Impingement in Semiopen Box or Open Box Posterior Stabilized Total Knee Arthroplasty” has been published in The Journal of Arthroplasty, September 2009. 
The second paper, “Does Functional Improvement Following TKA Correlate to Increased Sporting Activities” has been published in Orthopedics Journal. Dr. Bonutti’s coauthors are Dr. Mont, David Maker, MD, Mike McGrath, MD, and Frank Kolisek, MD located in Baltimore and Indianapolis.  The goals were to identify how patients can return to high function sporting activities following knee arthroplasty and to evaluate the potential long term risks.  Dr. Bonutti remains actively involved both in basic and clinical research, studying the effects of knee arthroplasty on patients functional activity with a goal of optimizing patients functional results after total knee arthroplasty.   The first research was performed in Effingham. The second paper was a joint research project in Indianapolis with Dr. Kolisek and in Baltimore with Dr. Mont.
Dr. Bonutti currently has 51 papers published articles on Pubmed.

On August 26-31, 2009, Peter Bonutti, MD was invited to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kobe to lecture and speak on Triathlon Total Knee Replacement, Unicompartmental Knee Replacement, and Minimally Invasive Surgery Techniques.  He was visiting professor at the University of Kobe, and lectured to the Department of Orthopedic Surgery on Design Rationale of Total Knee Arthroplasty and Minimally Invasive Surgery Techniques.  He made a number of visits to regional hospitals in Tokyo and Osaka and discussed Minimally Invasive Knee Techniques.

Dr. Peter Bonutti was invited faculty at the Triathlon Champions Symposium in New Orleans, LA, May 8-10, 2009. He presented a lecture on “Triathlon Unicompartmental PKR Experience – Early Results” to over 100 orthopedic surgeons.   
On May 19th Dr. Bonutti, an Associate Clinical Professor, presented “Unicompartmental TKA: Pros & Cons” to orthopedic residents at the University of Arkansas.  He has been involved in instructing orthopedic residents on innovative surgical techniques for over 10 years. 
On June 4, 2009, Dr. Bonutti was an Alumni Guest Speaker for the Research & Basic Science Days at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.  His presented on “Inventing Orthopedics”.

Dr. Peter Bonutti was an invited speaker at the Great Expectations: Patients, Prostheses and Practitioners on Mar. 19 – Mar. 20, 2009, in Prague, Czech Republic.  There were over 650 orthopedic surgeons in attendance from around the world.  Dr. Bonutti was the Moderator of the session titled “Unresolved Challenges of Primary TKR”.  Dr. Bonutti was guest speaker on “MIS-TKA Meeting Expectations”, “Partial Knee Resurfacing-Tibiofemoral”, and did the Keynote Address on “Introducing Triathlon PKR”.  Dr. Bonutti is the lead designing surgeon for Triathlon PKR and helped develop the implant and instrumentation for this unicompartmental knee system.

Dr. Peter Bonutti was an instructor, speaker, scientific and poster exhibitor at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons from Feb. 25 - Mar. 1, 2009, in Las Vegas, NV.  There were over  20,000 orthopedic surgeons in attendance.  Dr. Bonutti was Faculty in the Instructional Course titled “Patient Selection, Preoperative Planning, Surgical Approaches & Future of Minimally Invasive TKA. 
Dr. Bonutti presented two papers at the Academy meeting “Femoral Notch Stenosis by Soft Tissue Impingement in Semi-or-Open Box Posterior Stabilized TKA”, and “A Comparison of Subvastus & Midvastus Approaches in TKA”.  He also Co-Authored two other papers; “Static Progressive Stretch For the Treatment of Knee Stiffness Following TKA”, and “Evaluation of Static Progressive Stretch for the Treatment of Wrist Stiffness”.
Dr. Bonutti also was author on Scientific Exhibit “Shoulder Resurfacing; Past, Present & Future”.  He also authored a poster titled “Effect of Obesity on Clinical Success and Patient Satisfaction in Total Hip Arthroplasty”.
Dr. Bonutti’s company, Bonutti Technologies, also displayed their new technologies including: 1) Joint Active Systems new shoulder orthosis, a new finger tray, and a durable knee device with custom fabricated cuffs.   2)  Unity Ultrasonic fixation for tissue fasteners was FDA approved welding and 3) TranSet Tissue Fixation Systems.
