Peter M. Bonutti, MD
On March 10-11, 2011 Peter Bonutti, MD, was a member of Stryker’s Innovation and Council Meeting in Mahwah, NJ. The meeting is attended by 25 senior consultants and surgeons from Stryker Corporation from the US, Australia, Japan, and Europe. Discussions were held on design implants and instruments for primary and revision total hip arthroplasty as well as clinical trial and research in hip arthritis and hip arthroplasty.
2010 Events
Peter M. Bonutti, MD
On October 19-20, 2010, Dr. Peter Bonutti was invited as a visiting professor to four hospitals and universities in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain. He performed Live Surgery broadcasted to over 100 surgeons in Barcelona, Spain at Hospital Clinic University of de Barcelona and has been invited by the same professor to come back in February. Following the surgery,
Dr. Bonutti gave a lecture on “Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty Principles, Exposure, and Techniques.“
Dr. Bonutti then flew to Madrid, Spain where he performed a Live Broadcast Surgery of Triathlon Total Knee Replacement at the Hospital Santa Cristina assisted by Professor Fernando Marcos.
Dr. Bonutti then was invited by Professor Pedro Guillen Garcia, the world innovator on autologous chondrocyte implantation, and lectured at the largest private hospital in Spain, Clinica Cemtro on “Bearing Surfaces in Total Knee Arthroplasty.”
On December 3-5, 2010, Peter Bonutti, MD, was an invited faculty member for the Greater Expectations Meeting for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty in New York City, an international conference attended by over 400 surgeons. Dr. Bonutti moderated a Live Surgery by Dr. Steve Harwin on cementless primary total knee arthroplasty and discussed surgical techniques on knee arthroplasty and the advantages and issues with cemented versus cementless ingrowth surfaces.
Dr. Bonutti also lectured on “Clinical Performance and Satisfaction in Total Knee Arthroplasty” and another lecture on “Disposable Instruments in Joint Arthroplasty”. Dr. Bonutti also presented case reports on complex total knee and total hip arthroplasty.

Peter Bonutti, MD, was the Chairman of an Orthopedic Course in Mahwah, New Jersey titled; “Current Trends in Managing the Aging Athletes Knee” which was held on August 19, 2010. Dr. Bonutti chaired the course with approximately 50 surgeons in attendance. Dr. Bonutti spoke on Unicompartmental Knee Replacements, Bicompartmental Knee Replacements and lectured on “Design Considerations for a UKA Systems”. The course was designed for new trends in treatment of knee osteoarthritis and early intervention for patients with knee osteoarthritis. It included work on the anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate ligament sparing knee replacement designs.
On August 27-29, 2010, Peter Bonutti, MD was invited faculty at the Fourth Annual Hip Joint Course, titled “Treatments for Young Patients with Hip Arthritis: Arthroscopy, Impingement, Anterior Approach Resurfacing and MIS Hip Arthroplasty” in Baltimore, Maryland. There were over 200 surgeons in attendance and 40 faculty from all over the world. Dr. Bonutti presented on “Minimally Invasive Hip Surgery: We Can Use Any Stem”. Dr. Bonutti was also involved in discussions and lab sessions on Anterior Approach to the Hip, Hip Arthroplasty and Hip Resurfacing.
On September 16-17, Dr. Bonutti was an invited faculty on a design panel for Stryker Orthopedics looking at total knee arthroplasty with anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate and ligament sparing design. Dr. Bonutti lectured on ACL / PCL sparing concepts for total knee arthroplasty and was involved in a cadaveric course and a design course; ACL / PCL Sparing TKA Designs. Stryker Corporation is the largest orthopedic medical device company in the world and is headquartered in Mahwah, New Jersey. They are developing new technologies in Total Knee Arthroplasty and are developing an implant for total knee replacement system sparing both the anterior cruciate and posterior cruciate ligament.
Timothy J. Gray, MD
Dr. Timothy Gray has recently completed his first fictional novel, The Magician, and held a book launch and signing in the lobby of Bonutti Clinic on June 25, 2010. He was very pleased with the interest in the public and is thankful to all who attended the event. He sold 150 books over the time period from 5:00 - 6:30 pm. For every book sold at Bonutti Clinic a $1.00 donation will be given to the Helen Matthes Library in Effingham. The library has been very supportive of Dr. Gray’s endeavors and have helped with advertisement of his book in their lobby. Books will continue to be available at Bonutti Clinic through the Billing Department at $15 per book or they can be ordered online from amazon.com or iUniverse.com. Dr. Gray’s novel is a modern day vampire story / occult detective novel. He is currently working on a followup novel with the same protagonist based in New Orleans titled; Bad Voodoo. Dr. Gray welcomes anyone who is interested to pick up a copy of The Magician at Bonutti Clinic.

Peter Bonutti, MD was invited faculty and a keynote speaker at the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Orthopedic Association in Tokyo, Japan May 27-29, 2010. Over 2,000 orthopedists from Japan and Asia attended the meeting. Dr. Bonutti presented on his Clinical Experience With Crosslinked Polyethylene For Hip Arthroplasty in 589 Patients.
Dr. Bonutti spoke on First and Second Generation Crosslinked Polyethylene, as well as Ceramic on Ceramic Hip Arthroplasty.
Dr. Bonutti also spoke on results of a Multicenter Prospective Study on X3 with Evaluation of Clinical Radiographic and Wear Analysis.
He is a lead investigator on a prospective multicenter study, evaluating the X3 highly crosslinked polyethylene. Other sites in the study include Mayo Clinic, New England Baptist Hospital, Indiana University, Baylor University, and Emery University. The study assess the clinical and radiographic results with wear analysis of X3, the first third generation highly crosslinked polyethylene which decreases wear comparable to metal on metal bearings without the risk of metallosis.Peter M. Dr. Peter Bonutti was an instructor, speaker, scientific and poster exhibitor at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons from Mar. 9 - Mar. 13, 2010, in New Orleans, LA. There were over 10,000 orthopedic surgeons at the International Meeting. Dr. Bonutti was Faculty in the Instructional Course titled “Patient Selection, Preoperative Planning, Surgical Approaches & Future of Minimally Invasive Total Knee Arthroplasty. Dr. Bonutti was Author and Presenter of the paper “UKA in Obese Patients who have Body Mass Index of 35 Kg/m2 or Greater: A Comparison Study”. He also coauthored two other papers at the academy meeting, “Chronic Opioid Use Prior to Total Knee Arthroplasty” and “Are Commercially-Available Solutions Effective Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus?”. He was the author and presenter of poster “Tourniquet Use During Total Knee Arthroplasty”. Dr. Bonutti also coauthored two Scientific Exhibits “Overview of Alternative Bearings in Total Hip Arthroplasty” and “Athletic Activity Following Total Hip Arthroplasty: Assessment and Outcomes”.

Josue Gabriel, MD
St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital welcomes back Josue P. Gabriel, M.D., to their Medical Staff. Dr. Gabriel rejoins the Bonutti Clinic with his subspecialty practice in orthopedic spine surgery. He previously served in Effingham from 2002-2004 at the Bonutti Clinic. In the interim, he was Assistant Professor and Director, Division of Spine Surgery, Department of Orthopedic Surgery at The Ohio State University. His practice focus has been advancing his techniques in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.
Dr. Gabriel earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Gabriel also received a post-graduate fellowship in Cervical Laminoplasty techniques at Universities of Osaka, Hirosaki, and Chiba in Japan. Additionally, he completed a fellowship in Spine Surgery at Case Western Reserve University Department of Orthopedics Surgery under Dr. Henry Bohlman.
Dr. Gabriel and his wife Rebecca, and their three children are excited about their return to Effingham. Please join us in welcoming back Dr. Gabriel to St. Anthony’s and the Effingham community!
